Co-op Income & Co-op Fees

On this page:

How much will I make as a UTSC Arts & Science Co-op student?

One major difference between co-op in high school and co-op in university is the fact that, in university, co-op offers you full-time, paid work experiences. In addition to all of the other benefits of co-op, this pay is a great way to offset your tuition costs or kick-start your savings.

UTSC Co-op Student: Average Hourly Wages

PROGRAMAVERAGE HOURLY WAGE
Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics$22.40/hour
Arts$18.28/hour
Sciences$17.96/hour
Psychology & Health Studies$16.37/hour

It's important to remember that your income could be a little higher than this — or a little lower — depending on:

  • the role you secure;
  • the amount of experience you have (i.e. senior co-op students may be paid more because they have more work experience); and
  • the industry that you're working in (i.e. an Arts student who lands a job in finance will probably earn more than an Arts student who lands a job in the not-for-profit sector).

That said, the average income for an Arts & Science co-op student in previous years was $11,790 for each 4-month work term that they went on (multiplied by 2 or 3 work terms over the course of their degree).

Where do my co-op fees go?

In addition to your University of Toronto tuition fees, students are required to pay a co-op fee.

These fees help us to offset the costs of running the program and help us to offer you services that help you succeed, including:

  • Advising and preparing you for your co-op work terms through classes, networking events, mock interviews, and more
  • One-on-one office hours for assistance during your job searches with our Coordinators
  • Building relationships with reputable employers who post new and recurring positions with the program
  • Monitoring the quality and suitability of the jobs that come through our office, as well as conducting work site visits while you’re on the job

Regardless of whether students enter the program in the first or second year of university study, all students in the Arts & Science Co-op program are eligible to complete the maximum number of work terms as required by their program. The co-op fee schedule ensures that the total amount of co-op fees payable is fairly assessed regardless of the year of entry.

Schedule for fees assessment

The payment of co-op fees is spread over a number of sessions (Fall, Winter, Summer). The number of sessions and the amount of the fees depend on the year of entry to the program.

For students admitted to the Arts and Science program in Year 1, the co-op fees are payable in each of the first eight sessions (Fall, Winter, or Summer) in which the student either enrolls in any number of courses or is on a work term, after which no further co-op fees will be payable.

For students admitted to the Arts & Science Co-op program in Year 2, the co-op fees are assessed at a somewhat higher level, but are payable in each of the first six sessions (Fall, Winter, or Summer) in which the student either enrolls in any number of courses or is on a work term, after which no further co-op fees will be payable.

Fees payment

As in the case of tuition fees, co-op fees are posted to a student’s account. The co-op fees for the Fall and Winter sessions will be posted in the Fall; students must make a minimum payment to register, then they may pay the balance of their account in monthly installments. Accounts should be paid in full by the end of the Winter session. In the event of an outstanding balance at the end of the session, students will not be permitted further registration, nor have transcripts issued. For the Summer session, co-op fees are payable in full at registration. For more details on payment of your account, see the Student Account Information Booklet provided with your registration material.

Please note that all co-op students are charged co-op fees at the beginning of each registration period. If students do not register in courses or are not on a work term, the fees are reversed at the end of the course enrollment period in mid-May, mid-September, and mid-January.

Refund Policy

If a student withdraws during the session from all of the courses in which they have registered, the refund schedule for incidental fees will apply to the co-op fees. If a student leaves the program for any reason, co-op fees paid in earlier sessions are not refundable. If a student registers for courses and subsequently secures a work term, students can request a refund of course fees. Information on how to do this is provided in your "Next Steps You Are Hired" email.

During a term, any fee refund considerations will follow the refund schedule for â€˜Category 2: Incidental fees – Campus and Societies Fees’ which is set by the Registrar’s Office. Fees paid in previous terms are not refundable.
