Exploring The World of Research: A Job Shadowing Experience

team, people sitting, research, paper, learning, experiential learning

You might be wondering what a marketing student is doing in a research-based job shadow session? Research is the foundation across various disciplines — including marketing. Research provides an important understanding of the complexities of data processing, research methodology, and the implementation of discoveries in practical settings. I had the opportunity to shadow Jejociny Consalas, a researcher working as an information specialist at CAMH.

Our session began with introductions, and Consalas highlighted her professional background, achievements, and interests. She contributed to COVID-19 advertisements for the Public Health Agency of Canada, received awards for her impactful vaccine campaigns in Sri Lanka, and conducted interviews with industry professionals broadcast to the media.

For our experiential activity we found and summarized a research paper. This led to engaging discussions among the groups. From the studies presented by the groups, the one that stood out to me the most focused on the impact of physical activity and sports on the mental health of university students; highlighting findings that suggest exercise can act as an antidepressant and enhance mental well-being.

We concluded with a Q&A session where the host expressed her love for research. She encouraged us to seek opportunities, emphasizing that even volunteering opportunities are valuable. The goal was to forge connections and seize any chance that is given.

I learned more about the healthcare research field, and this Job Shadowing experience provided me with a glimpse into the dynamic world of research, and the challenges and opportunities it presents!
