Journalism: Course Sequence

Program Requirements:

This program requires the completion of at least 13.0 credits as indicated below, and:

  1. Students will be spending three consecutive semesters in Centennial College – Fall, Winter, and Summer of Year 3.
  2.  A minimum grade of 60% is required in the Centennial College courses to pass and maintain standing in the program.

NOTE: Centennial College courses for this program are taught at the Story Arts Centre campus, located at 951 Carlaw Ave, East York. 

Required Courses

First Year

1.0 Credit of Introductory Journalism Courses

           Introductory to Journalism and News Literacy I

           Introduction to Journalism II

0.5 Credit in Introductory Media Studies

           Introduction to Media Studies

 

Second Year

2.5 Credits of Journalism Core Courses

           Covering Immigration and Transnational Issues

           Critical Journalism

           Journalism in the Age of Digital Media

           Fundamentals of Journalistic Writing

Note: Courses for Year 2 of the program are taught on the UTSC Campus.  

Third Year

6.5 Credits of Journalism Application Courses

[Note: students will be eligible to enroll in the cluster of Group 1 courses after successfully completing at least 10.0 credits at the °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú (or obtaining permission of the Program Advisor), including MDSA01H3JOUA01H3JOUA02H3JOUB24H3JOUB01H3JOUB02H3JOUB39H3

Centennial College Group 1: Fall session

         * Contemporary Issues in Law and Ethics

         * News Reporting

         * Mobile Journalism

         * Visual Storytelling: Photography and Video

           Data Management and Presentation    

[Note: students will be eligible to enroll in Group 2 courses after successfully completing the cluster of Group 1 courses above.]

Centennial College Group 2: Winter session

         * Advanced Video and Audio Production Techniques

         * Interactive: Data and Analytics

         * Storyworks

         * Social media and Storytelling

         * Emerging tools and technology

[Note: students will be eligible to enroll in Group 3 courses after successfully completing the cluster of Group 2 courses above.]

Centennial College Group 3: Summer session

         * Business of Journalism

         * Entrepreneurial Reporting

         * Field Placement



*A minimum of C- (60%) in these particular courses is required to pass and maintain standing in the program.

Note: Courses for Year 3 of the program are taught at the Centennial College Story Arts Centre in East York.  

Fourth Year

2.0 Credits of Senior Journalism Studies Courses

1.5 credits at C/D-level in MDS or JOU courses, of which at least 0.5 credit must be at the D-level

               Senior Seminar in Journalism
