Introducing the new Certificate in Pathways to Health Professions! This Certificate combines your Health Sciences Major/ Major (Co-op) or Specialist/ Specialist (Co-op) within an Honours Bachelor of Science degree at UTSC. By completing the certificate, you will be taking courses that support a rich learning experience in the practice of social medicine and prepare you to consider a range of professional health-related options after graduation.

Enrollment in the Certificate in Pathways to Health Professions is currently only open to domestic students admitted directly from high school to a admission category within an Honours Bachelor of Science degree. UTSC students who were not admitted directly to the program are not permitted to add the Certificate to their programs at this time. To learn more about applying, click here.

Health Sciences Stream admissions categories:

  • Life Sciences鈥擧ealth Sciences Stream
  • Physical & Environmental Sciences鈥擧ealth Sciences Stream
  • Psychology & Health Studies鈥擧ealth Sciences Stream

I鈥檝e accepted my offer of admission to a Health Sciences Stream (HBSc): what now?

Congratulations, you are now a student working towards an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in a Health Sciences stream at UTSC!

Step 1: Review degree requirements. Degree requirements are a set of requirements you must complete to finish your overall degree. You should review these in the Academic Calendar on the  page.

Step 2: Consider which programs of study you would like to join. You may have noticed that one of your degree requirements is to join a certain combination of Programs of Study which refers to Specialists, Majors, and Minors.

Although you applied to a certain admissions category, first-year students do not officially belong to any specific program of study yet. To join your programs of study (PoSts) you will need to apply to those programs via your ACORN account at the end of your first year. Some programs (called 鈥渦nlimited programs鈥) have no program admissions requirements and can be added or removed at any time. Most programs, however, are 鈥渓imited鈥 meaning you may be required to complete certain introductory level courses and achieve certain grades to be offered admission to them. You can only apply for admission to these programs during the Spring and Summer application periods.

that lists admission and completion requirements.

You can find information on limited/unlimited programs and their application dates here.

The Academic Advising & Career Centre offers programming in March each year to help you understand how to choose your programs before the application deadline. You can also find more information through the Registrar鈥檚 Office page on choosing your program.

Step 3: Plan and add your courses on Acorn. Be sure to enroll in any first-year courses that are required for admission to the programs of study that you hope to join. You can find all the important dates you need to know for your academic term on the Registrar鈥檚 academic dates website.

Step 4: Review and consider courses for the Pathways to Health Professions Certificate. Keep reading for more information on this in the next section.

Pathways to Health Professions Certificate courses

The Pathways to Health Professions Certificate is automatically added as one of your Programs of Study. Although certificates do not count towards your degree requirements, they are an added bonus. To complete the certificate, you will need to complete 2.0 credits from a list of courses in certain categories.

Visit the  page in the Academic Calendar to view the courses and requirements.

Which courses should I choose?

You will choose four courses (2.0 credits) for completion of the certificate: one from each category outlined in the academic calendar:

It鈥檚 completely up to you! You should choose courses that look interesting and engaging to you. If there鈥檚 a particular career path you have in mind, you might try to choose courses that would add a complementary perspective alongside the courses you鈥檒l already be taking for your intended programs of study.

When should I take the courses?

You are free to choose and take these courses in any order, and at any time.

You could:

  • Take one or more of the courses in your first year
  • Take all four courses in your final year
  • Take one course per year over four years
  • Any other combination that works with your schedule, so long as all four courses are completed before graduation

Not all courses are offered every term or every year. Check the UTSC timetable to find out which courses are available in the upcoming term/year. Always check for course prerequisites and only enroll in courses if you meet the prerequisite requirements.

What if I decide to change programs to subjects outside of Health Sciences?

As you begin your coursework, your interests may take you in different directions than you expected, and that鈥檚 okay! As long as you join and stay in at least one major or specialist program that can be joined with the certificate, you will stay enrolled in the Pathways to Health Professions certificate. Since this is an enrollment requirement of the certificate, if you do not stay enrolled in at least one major or specialist joined with the certificate, you will be removed from the certificate program by the Office of the Registrar. For example, you can be enrolled in a double major in Human Biology and English, along with the certificate.

What if my program of study and degree requirements are complete and I鈥檓 ready to graduate but haven鈥檛 completed the courses to fulfill the certificate requirements?

If you are ready to graduate and request graduation based on your Specialist/Major/Minor program and degree completion but have not completed the courses needed to complete the certificate, then the certificate portion of your degree will be considered incomplete and not awarded. You would simply graduate with your degree and relevant programs of study, aside from the Pathways to Health Professions certificate.

Program titles (and certificates) are not named on degrees; your 澳门六合彩开奖接口 degree will state 鈥淗onours Bachelor of Science.鈥 Successful completion of the certificate is recorded on the academic transcript as a component of the undergraduate degree.
