New to UTSC? Welcome to the campus! The International Student Centre is here to support you. The International Student Centre offers comprehensive pre-arrival and post-arrival orientation programming for all new international students at UTSC.

In late August, we offer a pre-arrival virtual orientation and in early September you can look forward to our Orientation luncheon and Welcome BBQ. Please read below for more details on what鈥檚 covered and how to register for these events. 

These programs are of vital importance, as they will help you to ease your transition into Toronto, navigate your academic life, and will familiarize you with the services and supports at UTSC you need to be successful.

2024 Orientation Program Overview

Pre-Arrival: International Student Virtual Orientation Week August 21st, 22nd & 23rd  8:30am 鈥 10:30am EST (Online)

Join us for 3-days of virtual workshops designed to help you prepare for your arrival into Canada and hear from international students and ISC staff on how to successfully navigate your first couple of weeks at UTSC.

International Student Orientation Luncheon 鈥 Monday, September 2nd 9:30 am 鈥 1:00 pm 

(In person at the Highland Hall Event Centre)

The International Student Centre will be hosting orientation workshops on September 2nd  for all new international students. The workshops will help you understand legal documents, health insurance, and much more. Be sure to join us at our in-person International Students Orientation!  This is your chance to meet new peers, staff, faculty, and familiarize yourself with UTSC's campus. Lunch will be provided!  

 

Note: Family members are welcome to accompany you and attend this luncheon as well but must register in advance by the deadline above. We cannot guarantee food or beverages will be available for individuals who do not register. Thanks for your cooperation.

 

International Student Welcome BBQ 鈥 September 13th 3:00pm-5:00pm 

(In person at the H-Wing Patio)

New to Canada and to UTSC?  Let鈥檚 celebrate your arrival with a classic Canadian BBQ! Join us for an afternoon of live music, free BBQ Lunch, fun prizes, activities, and much more! At this event we will also have clubs and services fair where you can learn all about what campus life has to offer. This is a great opportunity to have fun, socialize, and make those vital connections which lead to lifelong friendships. We can鈥檛 wait to see you there! 

 

 

 

 

International Student Pre-Arrival Orientation Week: August 21st, 22nd, and 23rd 

Day 1: International Students and Their Families Virtual Orientation

Starting University in a new city or a new country is a big step. But don鈥檛 worry, we are here to help! This session will give you and your family members all the information you need to know about the available supports and services at UTSC that will help to guide you through your first year as an international student. 

We highly recommend that your parents/guardians or family members register for this virtual session. It鈥檚 a great opportunity to hear from current international students and for your family members get answers to their most pressing questions directly from our ISC staff.

Day 2: Preparing for your Arrival in Canada: What to Expect & Essential Documents 

When: Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, from 8:30am -10:30 am (EST) Online

Part 1: International Student Panel: Preparing for your Arrival in Canada (8:30-9:30am EST) 

Join this session to get all the essential information you need to know about travelling to Canada and getting yourself settled in those first couple of days. Maybe you are wondering where you can purchase essentials upon arrival? Maybe you are curious about what you should pack with you and what is better to purchase in Canada? Maybe you just want to hear from another international student who has been through this before?  If yes - this session is for you! 

Join our panel of upper year international students as they share with you their top tips and advice on how to make your arrival in Toronto as smooth as possible. Don鈥檛 miss this opportunity to meet fellow international students who have experienced the transition to Canadian University life!

Part 2: Social Insurance Number (SIN) Information Session with Service Canada (9:30-10:30 am EST)

Interested in working while you鈥檙e in Canada? One of the first steps is to obtain a Social Insurance Number! This Information Session will be delivered by a Service Canada Representative on Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) for International Students. 

The presentation will cover the importance of your SIN, the application process and its requirements, and how to protect your SIN once you obtain it. A Q&A will occur after the presentation to address any lingering questions you may have. Join us to learn about this essential part of your international student journey! 

 

Part 3: (Optional Session) Building a Culture of Consent (11:00am 鈥 12:00pm EST)

This virtual workshop fosters and promotes a culture of consent, care and safety.  This interactive session will share tangible tools on communication and connections in all interpersonal relationships such as friendships, romantic relationships and family. The training also equips attendees with information and resources on the Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Centre


The SIN information session and Session on Building a Culture of Consent - were not recorded for privacy / proprietary information reasons. 

Day 3: Intercultural Communication: Navigating Diversity & The Culture of Learning at UTSC 

When: Friday, August 23rd, 2024, from 8:30am -10:30 am (EST) Online

Did you know that Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world? It鈥檚 true! Over 250 ethnicities and 190 languages are represented in the Greater Toronto area. At UTSC we believe that diversity is our strength, and it is yours too! Join us for these workshops as we dive into what culture is and how it influences our values, customs, and academic life. 

Join Kathleen Meagher, Coordinator, Intercultural Education Programs, and Jocelyn Babudri, Coordinator, International Student Programs, for these informative workshops that will offer you an in-depth look at culture and learning at UTSC designed to boost your overall academic success. 

 

My Culture and Me (8:30 鈥 9:30 am EST) 

What is culture and how do I navigate these differences on and off campus?  At this session we will explore the ways in which our own culture influences our attitudes, behaviors, and values.  We will share advice about how to navigate culture shock and adjustment as you settle into life in Toronto. Finally, we will review essential intercultural communication skills which will help you to build relationships and communicate effectively with your peers and Professors both inside and outside the classroom.

The Culture of Learning in the Canadian Context (9:30 am 鈥 10:30 am EST) 

What it means to be an engaged learner is different in different cultures. The goal of this session is to explore what learning looks like in your culture and identity ways it can influence how we study, prepare for exams, take tests, and manage time. We will also explore the culture of learning from a Canadian perspective and will review communication strategies to enhance your experience in the classroom.

Part 2: Optional Session: Understanding the Work Study Program (11:00am 鈥 12:00pm EST)

After getting settled in Toronto, you may want to think about different ways you might be able to gain work experience while in Canada. Did you know you can find on campus paid work experience via the Work Study program at UTSC? This session is hosted by staff from the Academic Advising and Career Centre (AA&CC). Join this session to learn more about:

  • Work Study program eligibility
  • Work Study program streams: Work Experience and Research Experience
  • Work Study deadlines for the upcoming academic year
  • Steps for applying to Work Study positions
  • How to get started on creating/updating your resume for your applications
