On Wednesday, September 25, join the third annual Captivate competition and learn the art of digital storytelling.

This event is part of Captivate: UTSC's Digital Storytelling Competition, where you can compete for a chance to win incredible prizes including a mentorship experience with renowned Indigenous storyteller Shayla Ouelette Stonechild, and more!

  • Work with digital tools and creative teams.
  • Unlock your creativity and build a portfolio of outstanding digital content.

This initiative honours Sandford Borins, Professor Emeritus of Public Management, who was a faculty member of the Department of Management at UTSC from 1990 to 2020.  to learn about the competition requirements and deadlines.

Shayla Ouelette Founder, Matriarch Movement

Shayla Oulette Stonechild is a proud Red River M茅tis and Nehiyaw iskwew (Plains Cree woman) from Muscowpetung First Nation. She is dedicated to empowering Indigenous youth and women by sharing her journey and addressing issues like suicide within Indigenous communities. Shayla is the Founder and Host of the "Matriarch Movement," an online platform, podcast, and non-profit that amplifies Indigenous voices and offers wellness workshops across Canada. 

As a global yoga ambassador for lululemon, Shayla has over 800 hours of yoga teacher training and has been featured on the cover of "Yoga Journal" Magazine as the first Indigenous person to do so. She has taught yoga to large audiences and served on lululemon鈥檚 鈥淒iversity and Inclusion鈥 committee and their global advisory board for mental health. 

Shayla has also appeared on Season 9 of 鈥淎mazing Race: Canada鈥 and hosted APTN鈥檚 鈥淩ed Earth Uncovered鈥 and special segments with ET Canada, earning two Canadian Screen Awards for her work with ET Canada's 鈥淎rtists & Icons: Indigenous Entertainers in Canada.鈥 In 2022, she received the Indspire Award for "First Nations Youth鈥 presented by prime minister, Justin Trudeau.

Through over 40 brand collaborations (Peloton, Airmiles, Indigo, Telus) and recognition from major media outlets (Hello!, CBC, The Social, etc) Shayla focuses on themes like language revitalization, matriarchy, and Indigenous advocacy. She continues to be a powerful advocate for Indigenous rights and representation in mainstream media.
