Help make UTSC Homecoming a success! We are currently recruiting over 100 volunteers to help with set up, providing directions around campus, assisting with children's activities and at our information booths. This is a great opportunity to get more involved in the UTSC community and be part of a fun-filled day! Be sure to submit your form by September 15.

Come watch Céline Sciamma’s newest film, Petite Maman (2021), with members of the UTSC Francophone community! Following the film, there will be discussion and activities. All levels of French are welcomed, and subtitles will be used.

Celebrate °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú’s 60th birthday. We’ll have prizes, contests and — most importantly — cake. Visit our booth in the Entertainment Zone, where you can also enter a draw to win a prize; the winner will be announced on the main stage at 5:30 p.m.

Indulge your artistic side in the Residence Centre, where you can sip on delicious mocktails and enjoy 45-minute painting sessions starting on the hour from 1 to 5 PM with our skilled instructor.

Get in on fun for the whole family with a range of sports and recreation activities, including a 95-foot inflatable obstacle course for all ages. There will also be a bouncy castle for kids, and lawn games for everyone.

Enjoy the wonders of biology with fun family friendly  science experiments in the biology teaching labs (SW321). This event is open to all ages.

Learn in a unique way about development, communication, and behaviour with live spiders and insects. This exhibit will have live black widows as well as other spiders and insects - enjoy watching spiders "do their thing"!

SoundLife Scarborough

12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn, practice and play the ukulele, whether you're a newbie or a pro. You'll also discover how you can learn other instruments through SoundLife Scarborough, a lab that does its research by hosting events where communities make music, including free drop-in music programming.

Location: Environmental Science & Chemistry Building (EV) Atrium   

Roam through the Discovery Zone -- a long lineup of mind-boggling science activities and demonstrations. You can make your own slime, witness the power of liquid nitrogen, create a milk rainbow, help solve a mystery using chemistry techniques, discover our augmented reality sandbox, explore minerals, rocks and fossils, and more.

Complete all the activities and you’ll get a free ice cream cone.

Also at the Discovery Zone, figure out how much vitamin C is in different drinks, discover how drones are becoming a game-changing tool for scientists and more. Complete all the activities and you’ll get a free ice cream cone.

Ricotta Cheese with DPES and Culinaria

12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Make your own batch of ricotta and taste test it with your choice of fruit compote and honey, all while you learn the science and culture behind this prolific cheese, including how it became a popular means of preserving milk used around the world. You'll also get a taste of what Food Science and Food Studies is like in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences and the Culinaria Research Centre.

Understanding Uncertainty: Unraveling Paradoxes and Overcoming Biases 

 

Sotirios Damouras, Associate Professor
Find out which common biases may be clouding your judgement and unravel logic-defying paradoxes with statistician and professor Sotirios Damouras. As you explore the mysteries of probabilities and how people grapple with uncertainty, you’ll discover ways to identify your own biases and overcome them to make better decisions. No technical knowledge is required, just a curious mind. 
 
Immediately after, in the same room, is a lecture on cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools by management expert Andre Cire. Head outside the Instructional Centre after that to grab some ice cream.

AI, Data Analytics and You: Embracing the Future

 

Andre Cire, Associate Professor

Discover the potential of artificial intelligence with Andre Cire, a professor and expert in management analytics and optimization. He will share his insider perspective on how the latest game-changing AI tools can create even more value for business and the world. Learn about how these tools work, their practical applications, and how we can prepare for a future driven by automation.

This lecture immediately follows a lecture on paradoxes and decision-making by Sotirios Damouras, in the same room. Stick around after both — ice cream will be served outside the Instructional Centre.

Meet the ancestors!  Visit the Anthropology Teaching lab (HL303) and come face to skull with casts of some of the most complete human fossil skeletons known to science.  Ask questions about what we can learn from such exceptional specimens. Cookies provided!

Humour in English and Chinese Translation

Humour can get lost in translation; learn the guidelines needed to translate humour from English to Chinese and vice versa. Overcome the challenges created by different languages, cultural and historical references, wordplay and puns, and irony and sarcasm. Convert a few sentences and unlock the secrets to being universally funny.

Biology meets science-fiction: a roundtable discussion

Watch science-fiction novelist Miles Cameron and actor David Hewlett, known for his roles in Stargate and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, as they join °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú biologists to discuss how fact influences fiction — and vice versa. This round table discussion will dive into how biology inspires futuristic storytelling, and how science-fiction can impact and even predict real-life scientific advancements. Panelists:

Open Print Studio with Shannon Gerard

12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Use a working print studio to make your own notebook, and learn about typesetting, binding pages together and more. The print studio, called Plant Parenthood, is part of the exhibition Art Farm by artist, farmer and educator Shannon Gerard — she’ll be there in the Doris McCarthy Gallery inviting you to explore her work.

2024 Club Olympics 

There’s more than 250 clubs and campus groups at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú, and they all work together to connect students with each other and their passions… usually. At Homecoming, these groups will instead become fierce competitors, and their members will battle it out in a gauntlet of challenges as they fight to earn gold, silver and bronze medals at the first annual Homecoming Club Olympics.

Catch a game on the same day

Between Homecoming activities, head down to Dan Lang Field in °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú's picturesque Valley to watch your Toronto Varsity Blues men's baseball team take on their local rivals from Toronto Metropolitan University. 

Game one of this double-header starts at 11:30 a.m. and game two begins at 2 p.m.

Sustainability is a key priority for us. We have water stations across the campus for refillable water bottles. Biking or transit are also great ways to access our campus.

Rain or shine, activities run from 12 to 10 p.m.* on our main campus (north and south). General admission registration is recommended but not required.
