Early bird events in the Sam Ibrahim Building (IA) starting at 11 a.m.

Sotirios Damouras, Associate Professor
Find out which common biases may be clouding your judgement and unravel logic-defying paradoxes with statistician and professor Sotirios Damouras. As you explore the mysteries of probabilities and how people grapple with uncertainty, you’ll discover ways to identify your own biases and overcome them to make better decisions. No technical knowledge is required, just a curious mind. 
 
Immediately after, in the same room, is a lecture on cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools by management expert Andre Cire. Head outside the Instructional Centre after that to grab some ice cream.

This lecture immediately follows a lecture on paradoxes and decision-making by Sotirios Damouras, in the same room. Stick around after both — ice cream will be served outside the Instructional Centre

Our UTSC students got talent and want to showcase it to you!  Sit, watch, and cheer on our students as they sing, dance, and perform for a full audience outdoors.  Don't miss out on the chance to VOTE for your favorite performance.  The winning performance will be crowned this year's UTSC's Got Talent Champion!

Come watch Céline Sciamma’s newest film, Petite Maman (2021), with members of the UTSC Francophone community! Following the film, there will be discussion and activities. All levels of French are welcomed, and subtitles will be used. 

Celebrate °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú’s 60th birthday. We’ll have prizes, contests and — most importantly — cake. Visit our booth in the Entertainment Zone, where you can also enter a draw to win a prize; the winner will be announced on the main stage at 5:30 p.m.

Learn, practice and play the ukulele, whether you're a newbie or a pro. You'll also discover how you can learn other instruments through SoundLife Scarborough, a lab that does its research by hosting events where communities make music, including free drop-in music programming.

Enjoy the wonders of biology with fun family friendly  science experiments in the biology teaching labs. This event is for open to all ages.

Location: Outside the Science Wing, north of the Science Wing and Science Research buildings, southwest of the Arts & Administration building. ​​​​​​

Learn in a unique way about development, communication, and behaviour with live spiders and insects. This exhibit will have live black widows as well as other spiders and insects - enjoy watching spiders "do their thing"!

Get in on fun for the whole family with a range of sports and recreation activities, including a 95-foot inflatable obstacle course for all ages. There will also be a bouncy castle for kids, and lawn games for everyone.

North Academic Zone in the Environmental Studies Building (EV) (12 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

Location: Environmental Science & Chemistry Building (EV) Atrium   
 
Roam through the Discovery Zone -- a long lineup of mind-boggling science activities and demonstrations. You can make your own slime, witness the power of liquid nitrogen, create a milk rainbow, help solve a mystery using chemistry techniques, discover our augmented reality sandbox, explore minerals, rocks and fossils, and more.
 
Complete all the activities and you’ll get a free ice cream cone.

Located in the Environmental Science & Chemistry Building (EV), Catalyst Centre

12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Make your own batch of ricotta and taste test it with your choice of fruit compote and honey, all while you learn the science and culture behind this prolific cheese, including how it became a popular means of preserving milk used around the world. You'll also get a taste of what Food Science and Food Studies is like in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences and the Culinaria Research Centre.

South Academic Zone in the Meeting Place (MP) and Science Wing (SW) Terrace (12 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

Join the new Vice-Principal, Academic & Dean, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú Professor Karin Ruhlandt, for liquid nitrogen ice cream making. Whether you are into classic ice cream flavours, or enjoy trying something a little different, we will whip up a variety of options to tantalize and satisfy every palate. Join us for the free ice cream and stay and share your stories with Vice-Principal Dean Ruhlandt. She’s looking forward to meeting you!

 

Located outside the Science Wing (SW) 

Relive and immortalize your time at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú by exploring the Memories of Scarborough Campus project, a huge collection of stories and moments that bring our campus’ history to life. Add your own memories and take home unique souvenirs, including postcards with pictures of our campus throughout history. You can also use a button maker to turn some of our most special moments into buttons.

Tours start from the Humanities Wing patio. Look for us between the Meeting Place and the Humanities Wing in the South Academic Zone.

Take a guided nature walk in our very own valley with engaging Professors and learn about the flora and fauna of this area of Scarborough. 

Located in the Science Wing (SW) Terrace

Chinese calligraphy is the writing of  as an art form, combining purely  and interpretation of the literary meaning. This type of expression has been widely practiced in  and has been generally held in high esteem across . 

Come and learn the art from seasoned Chinese calligraphers. We will have your name translated in Mandarin and written by the calligraphers on an elegant piece of rice paper. Take home this memorable and meaningful gift!

The Doris McCarthy Gallery is located inside of Bladen Wing (BW), in the South Academic Zone

Meet the ancestors!  Visit the Anthropology Teaching lab (HL303) and come face to skull with casts of some of the most complete human fossil skeletons known to science.  Ask questions about what we can learn from such exceptional specimens.  Cookies provided!

Located in the Doris McCarthy Gallery – Bladen Wing 

Use a working print studio to make your own notebook, and learn about typesetting, binding pages together and more. The print studio, called Plant Parenthood, is part of the exhibition Art Farm by artist, farmer and educator Shannon Gerard — she’ll be there in the Doris McCarthy Gallery inviting you to explore her work.

Located in the Science Wing, room SW 319

Watch an acclaimed science-fiction novelist and an actor known for his roles in smash-hit sci-fi movies as they join real-life scientists to discuss how fact influences fiction — and vice versa. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú biologists are having a round table discussion with actor David Hewlett, from Stargate, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Cube, and author Miles Cameron, whose more than 20 books include Arcadia Deep Space and Deep Black. They’ll dive into how biology inspires futuristic storytelling, and how science-fiction can impact and even predict real-life advancements in science.

Humour can get lost in translation; learn the guidelines needed to translate humour from English to Chinese and vice versa. Overcome the challenges created by different languages, cultural and historical references, wordplay and puns, and irony and sarcasm. Convert a few sentences and unlock the secrets to being universally funny.

Located in the Science Wing Psychology Lounge (SW427A)

Relax and recentre yourself as world-renowened psychologist and mindfulness expert Zindel Segal guides you through a 30-minute mindfulness meditation session. Experience first-hand how mindfulness can help you relieve stress and live in the moment, while also learning the science behind this powerful mental skill.

Join us starting at 2:30 p.m. for a beverage before the session begins promptly at 3 p.m.

Located in the Writer's Room and Staff Lounge, on the fourth floor of the Humanities Wing (HW or H-Wing)

Come and celebrate the selected poems of Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm, reading from her anthology, (Re)Generation. You’ll also hear from UTSC Creative Writing alumnus Leanne Toshiko Simpson, author of Never Been Better. After the readings, stay for a reception to catch up and connect with Professors, students, and alumni.

Student Zone outside of the Student Centre (SL) (12 p.m. to 6 p.m.)

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½Ó¿Ú houses over 250 campus groups, all collaboratively working together to enhance the student experience.  The Club Olympics will turn the tables a bit as campus groups will be put through a variety of challenges as they compete to be gold, silver and bronze medalists for this year's First Annual Homecoming Club Olympics.
