Samir Parmar鈥檚 journey at UTSC is a testament to persistence and resilience. Initially enrolled in the Management program, he found his true passion after exploring an elective in Health Studies and switched to a double major in Co-op Health Policy and English, driven by a desire to make a difference in public health.

The journey wasn鈥檛 easy. In his third year, Samir struggled to secure a co-op placement, particularly with the , where he hoped to work on health policy. His first attempt at landing the position fell short due to a lack of confidence in the interview. Undeterred, Samir sought feedback from his co-op supervisors, who provided valuable advice and encouragement.

When the CASSA position was reposted, Samir applied again, this time with renewed confidence. His persistence paid off, and he was selected for the role. As a Health Equity intern, Samir excelled, organizing a successful Health Equity Summit at CAMH and building connections that led to a research opportunity with a CAMH researcher.

Samir鈥檚 co-op experience was transformative, deepening his understanding of health disparities and reinforcing his commitment to advocacy. After completing his degree, Samir chose to pursue law, where he continues to use the skills and insights he gained at UTSC to advocate for health equity. Now a lawyer at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, he encourages students to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities and to persist in following their passions.
