What鈥檚 new on campus: A look at food, study spaces and a new student services hub

As you return to campus for the new academic year, there are several exciting changes you may notice around campus. 

From more food options to a student services hub situated in the heart of a just-opened building, here are five new things to check out at 澳门六合彩开奖接口. 

Harmony Commons Dining Hall

The entrance isn't the only new thing about the Harmony Commons Dining Hall 鈥 it now features sushi and fresh pasta daily as well as a new coffee, slushie and soft-serve ice cream machines, just to name a few. 

There are some significant changes to the dining hall in Harmony Commons, the first-year residence building on the north side of campus, and all students are welcome to dine in and enjoy.   

Sushi and fresh pasta are now available daily. A new hydroponic station by  is growing lettuce and herbs that will be harvested inside the cafeteria monthly, while a new tomato squeezer will be used to make fresh pizza and pasta sauce.

Each day executive chef Leroy Whisker will prepare daily pop-up special during lunch or dinner.

There鈥檚 a new coffee machine that makes cappuccino, lattes and freshly ground coffee, and a new waffle and pancake station is also available daily, not to mention a new cr锚pe station. For dessert 鈥 or a snack 鈥 there鈥檚 also new machines for slushies and soft-serve ice cream. 

Meanwhile, there will also be a daily pop-up that will feature a special creation by chef Leroy Whisker. 

鈥淲e are really excited about our new food offerings at Harmony Commons,鈥 says Todd Wadsworth, a co-ordinator with Food Services at 澳门六合彩开奖接口. 鈥淭hese new additions are a direct result of student feedback.鈥 

The front entrance to the dining hall has also moved to the back of the building to help with the flow of foot traffic.

Starbucks renovation, frozen yogurt and Market Place

You can now place mobile orders and use your rewards points at the newly renovated Starbucks in the Meeting Place.

The newly renovated Starbucks, located in the Meeting Place, opened this week. You can now choose different food and drink offerings, place mobile orders and pay using your Starbucks Rewards (a.k.a. your 鈥渟tars鈥).

Earlier this spring a new frozen yogurt machine was installed on the third floor of the Science Wing (just above the Meeting Place) right next to another vending machine that serves Toronto Bubble Tea. Billi Jo Cox, marketing strategist for the Business Development team at 澳门六合彩开奖接口, says the frozen yogurt machine is already one of the most popular on campus. 

Market Place and Bottega will be offering reusable containers for takeout food. Cox says the program was piloted in the Market Place earlier this year as a way to cut down on waste from single-use containers and since it was such a success, they鈥檝e decided to expand it. 

Anyone visiting Market Place and Bottega will get a reusable blue container that has a QR code on the bottom. There is a 50-cent deposit on the containers which is refunded once they are returned to the bins located in front of the Market Place. Speaking of Market Place, , a build-your-own burrito bar, is back by popular demand. 

There鈥檚 also going to be food trucks at various locations across campus to start the semester.

A new hub for student services

The Sam Ibrahim Building has plenty of common spaces for students to study, eat and hang out. It's also a new student services hub. 

On the north side of campus, the Sam Ibrahim Building, a new state-of-the-art teaching space designed with students in mind, has welcomed students, staff and faculty. 

Three student services within the Office of Student Experience and Wellbeing (OSEW) have moved into the new building: AccessAbility Services, the Academic Advising & Careers Centre and the Health and Wellness Centre are all located on the fifth floor.

鈥淢oving into the Sam Ibrahim Building means we now have a one-stop shop for major student support services on campus,鈥 says Desmond Pouyat, acting dean of OSEW at 澳门六合彩开奖接口. 

The building also features 21 lecture halls 鈥 including the unique 500-seat 鈥渃ampfire鈥 classroom, with tiered desks encircling a podium and projector screens visible at all angles 鈥 new faculty and staff offices, and several common spaces that include welcome areas, a caf茅, lounges and study spaces. It will also house the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

The Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership will open inside the building in January 2025.

If you鈥檙e walking along the Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail, why not take a self-guided tour thanks to new trail signage? 

The Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail is a picturesque, fully accessible trail that connects the heart of the campus to the Highland Creek Valley. 

In addition to new welcome signs placed at all three entrances of the trail, there are six individual signs placed at various points along the trail鈥檚 railing, with information about the types of plants and animals you can find in the Highland Creek Valley. Each sign also has a QR code to scan for more information. 

The Department of Sociology has also put together an interactive trail walk activity that uses a digital story map. The activity takes about one hour to complete. 

Podcast and video studio in the UTSC Library 

The  currently underway in the  have already added more places to sit, relax and study. Now, there鈥檚 a dedicated space to making podcasts and videos. 

The One Button Studio will be open soon, giving students access to cutting-edge audio equipment for making videos. Students can use the space for class work as well as professional and personal videos. The , which houses an audio mixer, microphones and headphones for students to create their own podcasts, voice-over projects or live-streaming events, is now located next to the library鈥檚 .

The third and final phase of the renovation project will add new group study rooms and soft seating on the second floor of the library, as well as improvements to the archives and special collections reading room.
